Randolph D. Bynum



Randolph D. Bynum,  Sr.,  Superintendent   of  Sumter School  District,  has  27  years  of  experience  in education.  He  began  his  career  in  1976 as an elementary  teacher  in Lincoln  County  School  District in  North  Carolina  where  he  taught  for  seven  years before joining the Army in 1984. From 1992 to 1994, he taught language arts at East Augusta Middle School in Augusta, Georgia.  From  1994  to 2005,  he worked for Cobb County School District in Georgia in various positions including area superintendent for two years, principal and assistant principal of Pebblebrook High School  for  six  years,  an  administrative   assistant   at Harrison High School for one year, and a language arts teacher at Nash/Campbell Middle School for three years. Mr. Bynum worked for one year as the chief academic officer for Charleston County School District in South Carolina before moving to Atlanta, Georgia to serve as the associate superintendent for high schools until 2011.

Mr. Bynum earned a bachelor's degree in intermediate education from Gardner-Webb College in North Carolina and a master's degree in administration and supervision from the University of West Georgia in Carroll, Georgia in 1997. He was named a Fellow of the Broad Urban Superintendents Academy in 2007. In addition, while serving as chief academic officer in Charleston, SC in 2007, Mr. Bynum completed the prestigious Harvard University Public Education Leadership Program (PELP).  In addition to Mr. Bynum’s duties as superintendent, he serves as the Chairman of the Sumter County Heart Walk, is a member of the Sumter Sunrise Rotary, and holds memberships in local, state and national organizations to include the Sumter Chamber of Commerce Education Committee, the South Carolina Association of School Administrators, the South Carolina Association of Black School Educators, the South Carolina School Boards Association, the American Association of School Administrators and the National Alliance of Black School Educators.

Since moving to Sumter, Mr. Bynum and his wife Sara are pleased to call Jehovah Missionary Baptist their church home.  They have three adult children, a martial arts instructor, a social worker with the Veterans Administration, and a United States Marine.
